How many music magazines are on sale?

There were roughly 5-6 magazines in the stands but that is because some are not on sale yet.  

 

How many different genres of magazines are on sale?

There are many different genres from classical music to modern pop on average probably around 4 as we try to cater to the different music choices. 

 

What is the positioning of the music magazines in the store?

They are jumbled up so you can find many different magazines.  

Which magazines are at the front of the stand and at the back?

The more well known magazines are at the front as they want to be the first you see whereas the ones at the back are less well known.

 

What part of the magazine is on show the most and which part is shown the least?

Depending on where the magazine will be placed will be what is on show if the company knows it will be at the back they will focus on the title but if it is at the front then it will be the whole cover has to be filled with content.

 

How clear is the name of the magazine? Is the price clear?

Usually the titles are bold as they want to attract the reader so the name has to be clear so you can find it easy. The price is less clear as it is usually on the back so you have to pick it up and scan it.  

 

What do you notice about the positioning of the major artists? Can you discuss the eyes and why these are important?

They have positioned the major artists looking at you as the eye contact draws you in and it makes you think there looking at you 

I learned doing this the style and layout of the magazines. As they have positioned them to the liking of customers with the bigger selling ones at the front. The magazine companies also use this to their advantage by selecting the bits they know will be on show and filling them with the most information.

I have learned that Kerrang knows the average age of the buyers also knows it attracts the highest amount of young readers. This surprises me as they know a lot about their audience and their average readers. I am surprised that Kerrang fans are the most common purchasers of music by buying 6 albums per month. I has a readership of 345,000 which surprises me as it is a lot. They know so much about their readers so they know who to target for their audience and keep up to date with them.

I am surprised that NME know the gender percentage of their readers. Also they know the average age of their readers they also know their circulation as well as their social media followers. I am surprised that they know 75% of their readers read online also 58% of their readers discover new music through adverts of NME.

Magazine audience research

I learned that there are many techniques to making a magazine from just the main picture to the free gifts they giveaway. They think about everything as they want to boost the sales as much as possible.

Doing this task helped me to realise techniques I should use when making my magazine. Things like a bold titles and bright backgrounds. It has also helped me to layout my contents page and what I want it to look like. With the double page spread it helped me to use techniques like box outs and where to put Q&As also what to do with a picture and what to do about them. 

Institutional video

I learned from my research that there are a lot more magazines published and a lot more institutions than I thought. Also I learned that its not just magazines but t.v and radio. It is suprising that the institutions publish the magazines as I thought the magazine companies published themselves. I was surprised how many institutions there are as I only thought there were a few but there is quite a lot.

History of Music Magazines

I have learned a lot about music magazines by doing this task. I never knew how long music magazines have been around for and it is surprising that they have been running for such along time. It is shocking how long some of the big magazines like NME have been out for and that it is still going strong.

Institution research

By doing this I have learned that the weekly magazines are cheaper as there probably isn't as much information as they have to publish something every week whereas the monthly ones have more to wright about meaning usually they would be bigger with more information so they can charge more. Also if there is a weekly magazine they would be cheaper as there are a new magazine produced each week so they are making money on a more regular scale.

Evaluation

What Went Well?
Overall I think that the magazine went well as it looked good as I had planned it well and used interesting magazines as my inspiration. It looked good as I had made the background stand out and I had used interesting pictures. I think it was laid out well and it looked interesting

What Didn't go so well?
I think it could have had better fonts and colours as I think it was quite plain and they could have been bolder and maybe a better use of colours as I felt they were quite limited also I couldn't have made the title bigger as it would disappear ant then I wouldn't have a title.

How would you improve?
I think I could have written more for the planning as there wasn't much and I could have gone into more detail about the other magazines as they were quite brief in what I had written.

What have you learned?
I have learned that planning is important as I referred back to the other magazines for inspiration when I was making the cover as I had ran out of ideas on what to do also it helped me to actually start as I had no idea what to do before planning. Also I have learned that
